Supplement Safety
All supplements aren’t created equal. - Your safety when choosing supplements and what “L” numbers mean.
I’m often asked by patients whether they could get an equivalent supplement from my prescription at a pharmacy, health food shop or supermarket, or mention that something similar is available somewhere at a cheaper price.
Is there a difference in the supplements recommended by a practitioner and those you can buy off the shelf?
Yes! Absolutely!
The Benefits of “Practitioner Only” products –
- In Australia, medicine labelling is governed by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) and must be included in the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods (ARTG). “Practitioner Only” products are TGA approved and will bear an AUST R or AUST L on the label. - They are made with only the highest quality ingredients and are tested extensively to ensure that they are effective.
- Potency, quality and purity are carefully measured so to comply with studies that have shown to be an effective treatment for the conditions for which it is being prescribed. i.e. they tend to be stronger than cheaper retail equivalents.
- Those of us prescribing these products have undertaken extensive education and ongoing learning in order to recognise the correct use of the supplements or herbs, taking into account the specific doses required for each individual and their specific condition while being aware of any possible interaction with other supplements or medication.
- Although prescription only supplements may seem to cost more initially, you will find them more economical when comparing the quality and amount required to receive a therapeutic dose verses the cheaper retail brands with cheaper, less effective ingredients.
Other important points –
- Consult a well trained practitioner initially and throughout your treatment and maintenance period as your nutritional and supplemental needs may change. Regular check-ups ensure your nutritional prescription can be altered according to your body’s changing needs.
- If you need a repeat of your prescription and you are unable to contact your practitioner ensure you take your initial written prescription to another qualified person for dispensing.
Have a close look at the supplements you have. There is no point buying inferior cheap products that don’t give you’re the therapeutic effect that you need.
If you still have any questions, bring your supplements in to your next appointment so we can help you know the correct dose and use of the supplements that you have.
