Salivary Hormone Testing

Salivary Hormone TestingHormones play such a vital role in the maintenance of your health and wellbeing.  There are a myriad of lifestyle, dietary and environmental factors that can disrupt and unbalance your hormones so identifying any specific imbalance through easy, non-invasive and accurate testing is important.

Salivary hormone testing is a very convenient, accurate and non-invasive way to assess your hormone health.

What is Salivary Hormone Testing? Is it Accurate?

Yes, saliva tests are reliable indicators of the levels of all steroid hormones (cortisol, DHEAs and all sex steroids) in your body.

The value of measuring saliva is that it measures the FREE, and therefore biologically active form of hormones (those working inside cells) and is considered to be the gold standard for hormone analysis by the World Health Organization (WHO).  Blood tests, on the other hand, commonly used to determine hormone levels by most mainstream doctors, measure the TOTAL amount of hormones in serum. They do not distinguish the protein bound and therefore inactive form of the hormone, from its free and biologically active form.  Thus blood gives only a rough estimate of your hormone levels.

Advantages of Salivary Hormone Testing

  • It is non-invasive so there are no painful blood draws,
  • Multiple reading can be taken throughout a day or throughout a menstrual cycle
  • You can do it in the comfort of your own home – a test kit and detailed instructions will be sent to you
  • Test samples are collected from your home by the lab’s courier
  • Your naturopath or medical practitioner can order the tests for you and interpret the results for you

Health Conditions Salivary Tests Can Assess

This type of testing can uncover underlying biochemical imbalances and can be used for both women and men to assess many different hormonally driven conditions through the biologically active forms of hormones such as oestriol (E3), oestradiol (E2), oestrone (E1), progesterone, testosterone, DHEA and cortisol.  (Serum tests for oestriol (E3) and oestrone (E1) are not widely available in Australia. Therefore two very important estrogens will go undetected when using serum/blood analysis.  For instance, test results may show estradiol (E2) is normal but oestrone (E1) is elevated.  Unfortunately this problem would go undetected by blood tests.)

It is particularly helpful for assessing menstrual irregularities, fertility issues, miscarriage, menopausal problems, poor libido, endometriosis, polycystic ovarian syndrome, weight gain, chronic fatigue, chronic stress, anxiety, adrenal fatigue, depression, insomnia and many other chronic conditions.

What Does The Test Involve?

It is so easy. The test involves simply spitting into a test tube once or several times a day (cortisol or DHEAs) or several times throughout a menstrual cycle (other steroid hormones, such as oestrone (E1), oestradiol (E2), oestriol (E3), progesterone and testosterone). You can carry the test tubes with you during the day (they easily fit into a pocket or purse) so they are handy when it’s time to give a saliva sample. Immediate refrigeration is not necessary. Once the sample set is complete, you send the tubes back to the lab for analysis.  Your health practitioner will receive the results within a couple of weeks.

How Can I Get This Test Done?

Talk to your naturopath or health care professional about your symptoms and ask if this test would be useful for you. Unfortunately many mainstream doctors are still unaware of the validity, reliability and value of saliva hormone tests.
